Players can attack an opponent or focus on expansion through new settlements, holdings and trade to enlarge the principality. Added regions and holdings increase production and improving settlements to cities gains victory points in your struggle to win the contest. Hire knights to engage in tournaments, utilize spies and other special features to thwart your opponents plans.

The Settlers of Catan Card Game is one of the most pleasant additions to the Catan universe yet. Everyone here at Rainy Day Games are huge Catan fans. But one of the weaknesses of the Settlers of Catan board games is that 3 people is really the minimum size to enjoy the games. With just one buddy over, how can you escape into Catan for an hour or two?

The answer has arrived in the excellent Settlers of Catan Card Game. Catan is now just a shuffle and a deal away.

The back story is the same as the board game series. Two players begin with a simple two-settlement colony and race to accumulate victory points until one crosses the finish line (12 victory points) first. However, gamers out there looking to emulate the original board game will be disappointed. The Settlers of Catan Card Game uses an entirely different mechanic and style of play.

First, the two-player nature of the game creates a much more adversarial dynamic. Several of the cards and many of the successful strategies have one player directly attacking the other player's structures or subjects. And because of this, the co-operative trading and economy that takes place in the board games doesn't happen here. The card game is much more cutthroat than the board game.

Who should buy The Settlers of Catan Card Game? We especially recommend it for gamers who have trouble getting 3 or 5 people together for a full board game or gamers interested in testing the waters of Catan without paying the larger price of the board game sets. Of course, there are gamers like us who just love this series of games and leap at the chance to own another facet of it.
