Rainy Day Game's Board Game Review of The Kids of Catan:
The Kids of Catan in Summary
Now even your young children can take the journey to Catan with you. With this new addition to the Catan universe, Klaus Teuber has used themes and mechanics from the original Settlers of Catan and put them into a game for children ages 3-6.
The Kids of Catan board game will help young children with many skills such as counting, colour and shape recognition, set collection, etc. Even better, it shows your children that you can have fun away from the TV, and sets them on the path of a lifetime of gaming. Basic game skills such as taking turns, assessing the game board, comparing each person's progress and sportsmanlike behaviour are all encouraged.
Designed for young children, The Kids of Catan is not a great battle of wits. Game play centers around rolls of a die, and there aren't many chances for strategy. However because of this parents can play with their children without totally dominating the game or intentionally losing.
The Kids of Catan Gameplay
The Kids of Catan game board consists of a townsite in the center, a road whichs circles around the town and a field of resources around the edge. Players pull their carts around the road collecting resources.
The road rotates around the town so that all players move in synch. The current player rolls the die and advances the road that many spaces. All players then look to the edge of the board beside their piece. If there is a resource there, they may put it into their cart. However, players are only allowed to carry one of each resource. There is also a Robber lurking out there, and he'll steal one on your resources if you land next to him.
When a player has a complete set of one wheat, one brick, and one wood they may build a house in the town site. After a player has built all their houses, they collect one final set of resources and build the Town Hall, making them the winner.
Who should buy The Kids of Catan?
The Kids of Catan has a very focussed market. Don't buy this game for beers with your buddies on Friday night, OK? Parents with children in the target range of 3-6, or anyone wanting to give a present to such a family, will be very pleased with the quality and durability of the game. And the family we resently gave this game to as a Christmas present said their 4 year old child enjoyed playing with the game components on their own almost as much as playing the game!
The Manufacturer's Board Game Review of The Kids of Catan:
In the glade will lie a town,
Each player has a set of buildings to place. Placing a building uses an whole wagon load of resources: 1 each of wood, bricks, and wheat. The roll of the die determines how far the wagons will move. When any child stops beside a resource that they need, they can load the resource into their wagon. When your wagon is full, you get to build a new house! The house must be placed in the right spot in the village. Then the resources are returned to the board so they can be collected again!
After you build all your houses, you begin collecting resources again to build the Town Hall. The player who builds the Town Hall wins the game! Of course, children are also encouraged to play with the wonderful wooden buildings by themselves, and to create their own games and adventures in Catan!
