Rainy Day Game's Board Game Review of Puerto Rico:

Puerto Rico in Summary

Are you flexible, able to think on your feet? The Puerto Rico board game will challenge you with such a variety of scenarios and strategies that you will surely be playing it for months and months to come. The way you play Puerto Rico depends heavily on the choices other players make, so your carefully planned strategy will be constantly changing.

Puerto Rico Gameplay

The Puerto Rico board game has a simple gameplay concept, but with so many details that we can't tell you all of them here. The rulebook does a good job of that. So, we'll give you an overview of Puerto Rico gameplay to help you understand the game.

You're a colonial governor in the newly discovered land of Puerto Rico, and your job is to grow crops (which you will sell or trade for money), develop your colony and ship your products back to the Old World. You accomplish these goals by taking roles such as Mayor, Builder or Captain.

But each player can only take one role each turn, and there are more roles than there are players! On your turn you select a role and all players perform its task: for example when the Mayor is chosen players recieve new colonists. These colonists work on your plantations and staff the buildings in your colony. However, the player who actually chooses a role gets a bonus, and for the Mayor that means you get an extra bonus colonist.

You earn victory points in two ways: buildings and shipping products back home. As you build new buildings, they bring bonuses and improvements to your colony, like improved storage and processing for the things your plantations grow, or improving your shipping abilities.

Game play ends when a player collects 12 victory points, when all the colonists to Puerto Rico are used and the island is full, or when a player develops his colony so much s/he cannot add another building. The variety of endings and the many paths you can take make the strategies in this game a real challenge to master.

Who should buy Puerto Rico?

The Puerto Rico board game is more challenging than average. It's best appreciated by more experienced gamers, and we don't recommend it for a first-time gamer. After you've cut your teeth on the Settlers of Catan, then it's time to move on up to the Puerto Rico board game. Are you ready to take the next step and try a gamer's game? Buy Puerto Rico to get a mental workout, a lot of fun, and a great gaming experience!

The Manufacturer's Board Game Review of Puerto Rico:

Prospector, captain, mayor, trader, settler, craftsman, or builder? Which roles will you play in the new world? Will you own the most prosperous plantations? Will you build the most valuable buildings? You have but one goal: achieve the greatest prosperity and highest respect! This is shown by the player who earns the most victory points. He will win the game!

Jeremy's Board Game Review of Puerto Rico:

The best game I have ever played. It took us a while to learn it, but it was worth it. There are so many ways to win, you can try to buy your victory, or you can try to ship your way to victory, but for the most part, a balanced game is needed to win. We have found use for every building available, even the ones that don't look very useful. The more you play the more strategies that you will find to win. The best part of this game is the minimal luck that is involved. This game is for serious gamers. If you are a serious gamer, you will love Puerto Rico.
