Rainy Day Game's Board Game Review of King Me!:
King Me! in Summary
From your first look at the bright, cartoon-like art work of the King Me! board game, you'll realise that this isn't hardcore strategy. But that's OK. King Me! is designed to be fun, fast and lighthearted.
Players bluff their way to the highest points by advancing pawns up the levels of a castle without getting elimiated. Showing favoritism for a piece is sure to get it eliminated, so play it close to the chest! Lots of player interaction and a short playing time make this a great filler or family game. Lots of laughs to be had.
King Me! Gameplay
King Me! starts with the 13 subjects of the realm being placed near the bottom of the castle by the players. The subjects will attempt to climb the 7 levels to the throne room and be elected King (don't worry about the mixed political systems). Each player receives a list of their secret favorites which will yield points for them at the end of the round.
Your job as a player is to get your secret favorites up to the higher-scoring levels of the castle. But be careful! If other players catch on who you want to score, they will try to elimiate that subject from the race. This is done by election.
When a subject reaches the throne room, the players cast their votes by card. A single "No" card dooms the subject to removal from the board. But you are only given a limited number of No cards, so consider carefully who you veto.
So players move subjects up the ranking, making decisions about whether to advance their own pieces, or advance other pieces for election and elimination (are you sure they will be vetoed?). After a subject is successfully crowned king, the round is finished and points are totalled. Only the subjects on your secret favorites card score points, from 0 to 10 depending on which level they are on (King yields 10 points). After three rounds, the point totals are compared and a winner declared!
Who should buy King Me!?
Like other games of this type (Bang, Shipwrecked, etc...) there are two main groups who need to get this game. King Me! is a great game for families and non-gamers because it's fast, simple rules and high player interaction make it a great social game. And for more serious game groups, there's always that half-hour before the other players arrive, or while someone is out getting pizza. For those times, you need a fast, fun game to keep people sharp and interested.
