Rainy Day Game's Board Game Review of India Rails (Boxed Edition):
The India Rails board game is another addition to the very popular Empire Builder series of crayon-train games. As in the other games, players draw their rail networks directly on the map and clean it between games.
There are a few things which set India Rails apart from the others in the family. First, the board is 1/3 smaller. This can make for a shorter game, but it's also important to observe that India's geography means that all the major cities to connect are on the coastlines, meaning along the outer edge of the board. It can be a challenge to make it all the way around the sub-continent in only 2 hours. 3 hours is a more reasonable expectation.
There are other rule variations that distinguish the India Rails board game. For instance, there are pilgrims to pick up and transport. We find they don't get used much, but there are some cases that the pilgrims can give you the extra couple of dollars required to finance that master plan. There is also a new terrain type, the salt flats, and a new set of commodities to transport.
Learning the India Rails map may take a play or two, but the simple game mechanic will make even newcomers to crayon train games quickly feel at ease. India Rails is a solid addition to the Empire Builder family and a great choice for anyone wanting something different in a train game.
