The Manufacturer's Card Game Review of Hell Rail:
Each of the players fancies himself an engineer of the HellRail, conducting the souls of sinners to their torturous abodes in the great Inferno. But, only one of them will triumph and be spared eternal atrocity. Why not enliven your own gathering?
One could argue that Hell Rail is both a card game and a board game. The cards contain sinners (loads), brimstone (fuel), and track, allowing the cards to be played any of three ways.
Each player has a wooden train marker which he uses to mark his progress on the board. The cards form the track connecting the different levels of hell to the front gate and each other. The players train is formed of sinners which require the expenditure of brimstone to move.
Rainy Day Game's Card Game Review of Hell Rail:
Train games can be serious stuff, and after playing a couple in a row recreating the economic and industrial climate of a 19th Century country can get a little stale. The Hell Rail card game saves the day with a great premise and a game mechanic with a devilish sense of humour.
Clocking in at just an hour, the Hell Rail card game is fun and brief. One game makes a nice teaser or filler, three games makes a nice evening of gaming. Take your train through the nine circles of hell, delivering sinners to their assigned circles and scoring points for each load you successfully deliver. But be careful, as you travel you'll come across hellish dangers. Your tracks will disappear, other players will steal your cards, and you can even be run off the tracks by other players.
The game design is a wonder of innovation. The nice circles of hell and the Gates of Hell are laid on the table in a pattern. Players then use the sturdy square cards to play the game. These cards are multipurpose and a single card can be used in many different ways, for example as track, as fuel for your train, or as a load of sinners to be delivered. This simple and effective mechanism makes Hell Rail a pleasure to play.
The Hell Rail card game is great for anyone looking for a fresh twist on the train game theme at a low price. Here at Rainy Day Games, Hell Rail has helped to keep our interest in train games alive.
